WE MAKE BIOCHAR & CDR AFFORDABLE WITHOUT COMPROMISING
QUALITY
We think biochar is a good thing. A charcoal-like substance produced from pyrolysis of biomass (organic matter) in a low-oxygen environment, biochar is commonly referred to as the "Swiss Army knife of sustainability" due to its versatility and numerous potential benefits across various applications. It's used to improve soil health, sequester carbon, filter pollutants, and even be incorporated into construction materials. It contributes to physical decarbonization, offers durable carbon removal solutions for hard-to-abate, carbon intensive sectors, and supports long-term environmental, economic, and social sustainability efforts that our future world depends on. But it can’t just be good on paper; it must be affordable and effective so that customers do not have to decide between an economical solution and a sustainable one.

desired future condition (n): an ecosystem restoration goal or endpoint that achieves an ideal state or preferred outcome

OUR STRATEGY STARTS
IN THE FOREST...
The world relies on forests for survival and pleasure. And healthy, productive forests rely on strong markets to implement sustainable forest management. But our forests are being impacted. From land-use conversion, fragmentation, and declining or disappearing pulpwood markets to rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events (like droughts and floods), our forests have become more vulnerable to other threats like pests and wildfires. Some tree species even face extinction.
At DFC, we're on a mission to conserve forests and their ecosystems and strengthen the communities that rely on them. We develop long-term partnerships with landowners across North America for woody feedstock and in-woods biochar production sites to create new revenue streams and incentivize sustainable forest management decisions. Our projects improve the health of forests, increase resilience against catastrophic disturbance like wildfires, and deliver physical biochar and CDR at industrial scales to end-use markets with a focus on quality and affordability.

AND OUR IMPACT CONTINUES ON
TO THE FARM
While our strategy starts in the forest, it doesn't end there! It actually persists for centuries, in the soil on farms. That's because biochar is most commonly used in agriculture, as a long-lasting soil amendment to enhance soil fertility, improve water management, increase crop yield, and sequester carbon.
But not all biochar is created equal and depends on the feedstock and production technology. Our biochar starts with clean biomass (forest slash, logging residues, and cull timber) and is pyrolyzed in air curtain burners with built-in continuous biochar production features. This combination yields a consistent, high-carbon biochar with a physical and chemical profile perfect for soil applications. Accordingly, it's also suitable for a wide variety of other end uses like manure and compost management, stormwater management, and construction materials. Now that's impact, so much that you might say we're willing to "bet the farm" on biochar!
